Professional Portrait Photography: She Was 66 Before She Believed She Was Beautiful
How many times have you seen a photo and disliked how you looked? Perhaps you criticized the shape of your nose, the lines on your forehead, or how your pants don't quite fit like they did last year. I can honestly say I've done this many times myself. And I think we can all relate. What I've learned as a photographer is that photos can be false mirrors of how we see ourselves, or they can be transcendent, changing how we see ourselves and ultimately how we see the world.
One brave, strong, and beautiful client came to my studio and showed how photography, this one powerful gift, can positively change our self-perceptions if trusted right. That's one reason I believe in the power of professional portrait photography.
How Do We Develop Negative Beliefs About Our Appearance
A client came to my professional portrait photography studio recently who was 66 years old. For most of her life, she'd believed something very specific about the way she looked. But it wasn't an insecurity as we all have. Yet it was a heartbreaking limiting belief she'd carried for years, one she'd never really stopped to question.
To be honest, she didn't have to explain where it came from because I've already heard versions of this story from so many women who have sat in front of my camera: women in their forties having an empowering boudoir session, brides getting ready for their weddings, mothers coming to capture generational photos, and women who simply decided they wanted to do something for themselves.
They're all there for different reasons, but underneath it all, they often share something similar: a belief about their appearance that they've accepted as fact without ever asking whether it was true.
Why Do We Become So Critical of the Way We Look
Usually, it isn't one huge moment that creates these beliefs. It's actually something much smaller. For example, a comment someone made years ago, a bad photograph that somehow became "what I really look like” or a joke that stuck with you long after everyone else had forgotten it.
While it doesn't have to be true to become part of how you see yourself, we often repeat it enough until we believe it.
But most often this belief comes from a childhood experience and ultimately shapes how we see ourselves through our adulthood and beyond.
Ironically, we don't see our own faces the way other people do. We see ourselves in mirrors, phone cameras, windows, and photographs that distort our self-perception. And through that distortion, we notice the angles we don't like, we zoom in, and we compare ourselves to how we looked five years ago, or to how we think we're supposed to look now. All of which ultimately reinforce the belief that we’re unattractive, unworthy, or overweight.
Over time, the story we tell ourselves starts to feel like a fact with everything else supporting it. And once you believe something about yourself for long enough, it can be surprisingly difficult to imagine that anyone else sees you differently.
What Happens During a Professional Portrait Photography Session
This is the part of my job I care about most, and it's also the part people don't always understand from the outside.
Every session starts with a conversation beforehand. We talk about how you want to feel in your photos and what you hope to get from the experience. We talk about styling, wardrobe, whether you'd like to work with a professional hair and makeup artist, and what kind of session makes sense for you.
And if being in front of a camera makes you uncomfortable, that's okay. You don't have to know how to pose. That's my job. I'll guide you through it, make small adjustments, and show you self portrait photography poses so you're not left wondering where to put your hands or how you're supposed to stand. I'm there to pay attention to you and create photographs that feel like you. With my support, you will learn how to be confident in front of the camera.
This is part of what makes professional portrait photography so meaningful. You're creating an opportunity to see yourself from a perspective you may not have considered before, which is why portrait photography ideas can be so personal and meaningful. Then the reveal and ordering appointment changes everything. You see your fully retouched images for the first time, all together, in one sitting.
That's when I watched this client become completely still. She looked at a photograph of herself that didn't fit the story she'd been carrying for most of her life, and for the first time, she had proof the belief wasn't true.
Can Professional Photography Change the Way You See Yourself
I’m writing this article, right now, in my studio because of what my client told me after seeing her photograph.
She'd spent years avoiding cameras; she'd even stepped out of group photos, deleted pictures of herself, and found reasons not to be photographed. She'd carried the belief that she simply wasn't beautiful for so long that it had become part of how she saw herself.
But when she saw her photograph, something changed. For the first time, she allowed herself to question that belief. She looked at the image, stared at it for a moment, and said, "Oh my God. That's me. I'm beautiful. I can't believe it."
That moment is why I do this. She had spent decades looking away from photographs of herself. This time, she looked, and what she saw was a woman she could finally recognize as beautiful.
Can a Portrait Session Improve Your Self-Perception
I'm not going to tell you that one photo session can erase years of self-criticism because it honestly can't.
But sometimes, one photograph can make you stop and reconsider a story you've been telling yourself for a very long time.
For example, maybe your nose isn't as large as you've always thought, maybe your smile really is beautiful, maybe the lines on your face tell a story you don't need to hide, and maybe the version of yourself you've been avoiding is actually someone you'd like to see more often.
That's what I got to witness with this client. She came into the studio at 66 carrying a belief she'd had for decades. And she left with a photograph that gave her a reason to question it. That, my friends, is the power of professional portrait photography. It can shake the weight underneath you, make you feel seen, powerful, and beautiful, and scream that you deserve everything.
How Can Professional Portrait Photography Help You See Yourself Differently
If you've spent years believing something negative about the way you look, you don't have to keep carrying that belief as if it's a fact.
Professional portrait photography allows you to see yourself through someone else's eyes and create an image that challenges how you've always seen yourself. Sometimes, seeing yourself differently is the first step toward believing something different about yourself.
Book a free call with me to talk about your vision, ask questions, and see if a session is right for you. I'll guide you through the entire process, from planning your session to creating photographs that help you question the beliefs you've carried about yourself for years.
You are beautiful and enough. Perhaps you just need a photograph to help you believe it yourself.
