"At 20, I was afraid of what other's would think. But now, I say be true to yourself. Don't make yourself small just because it makes others uncomfortable", says Laura.

This final post about Patrick is about JOY! When I This final post about Patrick is about JOY! When I look at these three images, I really don't know how else to describe it. And that seems so fitting, because once you get through the hard spots in life, you're better for appreciating the joy that follows.

PART 3: "My plan for the future is to combine my decade of experience of working in public health and my education to continue my mission of being a helper. The lessons I've learned working on grassroot efforts and corporate initiatives have given me a unique lens on how to help organizations and communities find simple solutions to wellness. This includes my focus on projects that will help those individuals who at some point in their life have felt forgotten, alone, and disconnected.

My journey through life has allowed me to work alongside communities to reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences for future generations while we work to address the health outcomes of the adults who had these experiences while growing up. Trauma is a complex problem for individuals to address, and from a public health perspective we have to acknowledge that trauma is an individual experience and we don't have a magic pill that can make it go away. But we do have tools that can help individuals live their best lives.

My wife Megan Ripberger, and I co-founded Mezzo Solutions Corp. a few years ago and left our day jobs of working in community mental health and for the local hospital to pour our all into the company. Our services are designed to help organizations and communities find simple solutions to wellness. Megan has her Masters Degree in Social Work and is Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a decade of experience working as a therapist. Megan's expertise helps guide our offerings to include mental health resources straight from a licensed mental health professional. This allows us to offer workshops to organizations and communities on topics such as self-care, mindfulness, stress management, and other topics that you would learn about while attending traditional therapy or counseling."

Yeah yeah, I know there are lots of you who like to do things last minute and that works for some things, but when you plan your senior session ahead of time, you allow for a well-planned, low stress, FUN session.

DM me today and let's set up a time to talk over how I can best tell your story visually.
While these images were meant to celebrate a gradu While these images were meant to celebrate a graduation, the photoshoot took on a life of itself. I may have ideas loosely planned in my head, but I've learned over time that if you give it space, what is meant to be captured will be. While a celebration, I also think a session can be cathartic.

PART 2: "I spent my time away from high school reading and writing, finding my mentors in books. My fathers swift mental decline due to a combination of a stroke and what I can only describe as toxic stress due to the economy, job loss, becoming a widower, becoming a single parent, and grandparent all in about a 6-month period had me searching for answers. This search led me to the book "Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain" by the Psychologist Oliver Sacks. This book was full of "aha! moments" and case studies of how music can sneak its way into even the most locked up of brains to produce reactions, connections, and above all joy.

My time reading, writing, and learning about mental health helped guide me toward my purpose, which is to be a helper. My first job was assisting individuals in re-entry into the community after living in State Psychiatric Hospitals. This also included the opportunity to assist FEMA with similar work following Hurricane Sandy in New York. This work led me to work with a community mental health center where I helped children and families navigate life while experiencing mental illness and mental health challenges. My community work began to take off around this time and I began to find ways to do more and made a commitment to always show up to help. It was at this point when I decided to go back to school to become a better helper. This awarded me an Associates Degree in General Studies from Ivy Tech, a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Indiana University East, and a Masters of Public Health from Purdue University."
Oh friends, I've been eager to post Patrick's phot Oh friends, I've been eager to post Patrick's photography session, and to share his story. Let's start at the beginning. Patrick's wife called me to schedule a photo shoot as a surprise gift for Patrick's educational achievements.(If you know Megan and Patrick, you might regard them as the community's mental health power couple #mezzo.solutions)

We spent the afternoon CELEBRATING his graduation from Purdue with a Masters in Public Health with a camera and guitar in hand. But this moment didn't come easily for Patrick.
You see, he's had quite an inspiring journey to get where he is now, and he's an open book about the struggles, and the triumphs.

PART 1: "The reason I left high school at age 16 was because life had taken a toll on my mental health, and I didn't have two very important tools in my toolbox; knowing that it's okay to not be okay, and the ability to ask for help.

Middle school (8th grade) is when I had to start taking on adult responsibilities, both due to my own choices and because life is not always fair. Within one year I learned that life is too short with the unexpected passing of a close friend my age, the passing of my mother, and the news that I would soon be a teen father.

This chain of events left my father who recently had lost his job at Visteon along with his wife and life partner raising my older brother and I, while also supporting my newborn daughter. He did his best for as long as he could, but eventually we watched as his flame began to burn out, a combination of his body and mental health declining to the point of no return.

This left my brother and I living alone in a soon to be foreclosed home, the only home we had ever known.

At this point high school became increasingly difficult to attend. How could I concentrate on a book report, or final exams when I was constantly worried about having a roof over our heads and food in my cabinets for myself and my family? So I left and forged my own path, one that helped me heal and find the direction that brought me back to Connersville to help others like me, who at some point in their life have felt forgotten, alone, and disconnected."
While Tess and David declared their love before fa While Tess and David declared their love before family, friends and God at St. Mary’s Catholic church, they decided to celebrate their commitment at a Richmond, Indiana outdoor wedding venue. It was the best day for an October wedding! The weather was perfect. The sun was shining brightly. Summer was holding on for one last weekend. See more. Link in bio!
Did you know it is legal in 36 states to _discrimi Did you know it is legal in 36 states to _discriminate_ against a person because of their natural hairstyle?? 🙁

For centuries, Black people, especially Black women and girls, have faced hair discrimination. Recent studies indicate that black girls as young as five years old experience hair discrimination and black women are 1.5 times more likely to be sent home or know of a black woman sent home from the workplace due to hair discrimination. The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), which has passed in fourteen states, aims to address those inequities by prohibiting discrimination based on hair texture and hair style, protecting all presentations of natural hair—including braids, twists, locs, and knots.

At a federal level, the CROWN Act passed in the U.S. House of Representatives in March 2022. If passed by the Senate and signed by the President, it would prohibit hair texture and hair style discrimination in K-12 schools and workplaces across the U.S.

And in the meantime, let's celebrate what makes each of us unique.
Working through a concept for a photo shoot is one Working through a concept for a photo shoot is one of my favorite parts. Allison came to me for her senior photos with the intent on showing her passion for welding. Given the fact that she's about to enter a work field historically dominated by men, I wanted to show her strength as well as empower her femininity. Channeling my inner #annieleibovitz, we came up with a couple of different ways to visually show the energy inside her.

Many moons ago I found myself in a similar place with a passion for visual storytelling in a field primarily dominated by men. Being the only female news room videographer at WKYT in Lexington, KY gave me a new respect for women who have broken barriers in the past, and for those yet to come.

Allison, thanks for choosing me to help tell your story!
